The primary focus of the K-12 GIS Education Web site will be to continually provide access to teachers, students and school districts with up-to-date information on geography and GIS as it relates to K-12 Education in Minnesota. Firewise in the Classroom Project: New Simplified Firewise in the Classroom Curriculum is Internet Based and Works on Windows PC or Macintosh The Firewise Community Assessment with JavaMaps project provides a unique, hands-on opportunity for students to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assess the wildfire risk of their community and to educate their community on steps that can be taken to reduce that risk. The new, simplified curriculum uses an Internet based GIS Wildfire Risk Assessment process called JavaMAPS. The curriculum has only five lessons that can be completed in as little as 5 class periods using Macintosh or PC computers. The curriculum is correlated to national and Minnesota Academic Standards in Geography and Science.

Through the Firewise in the Classroom Project, students gain content knowledge, apply new skills, are exposed to potential career paths, and provide valuable data to their community and state.

Food for Thought: a Geography of Minnesota Agriculture:  Minnesota's Academic Standards: The nine geography lessons and 33 black line master maps have been designed specifically to enable students to master the essential skill standards. The black line maps were designed for use on overhead projectors and also for use by individual students. The 4-color student desk map is designed so students have a personal map for reference and lesson activities.

GeoThenic: How should a K-12 geography teacher use a geospatial technology in the classroom? Should they have students pinpoint a series of locations and measure the connecting distances, essentially using the technology as a mere digital representation of the traditional globe? Or, should they encourage learners to harness the powerful data-driven affordances of the technology to make and justify decisions on contemporary issues (for example, where to build a hospital in downtown San Francisco based on factors of seismic activity and population density)? We believe it is the latter scenario – this is the foundation of GeoThentic. This environment is an all-inclusive curriculum teachers can integrate in their classroom!

Mapping Minnesota: MAPPING Minnesota, a collection of nine geography lessons developed to incorporate selected maps from the Minnesota Historical Society's (MHS) exhibit, 'Minnesota on the Map:' Four Centuries of Maps from the MHS Collection.

It is affiliated with and financially supported by the National Geographic Society (NGS) and is currently located at Macalester College in the Geography Department, St. Paul, Minnesota.

Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College provides a variety of resources for science educators.  It has a special portal for K-12 Educators.  A full section is devoted to GIS resources, including teaching activities and examples.

Arc Lessons
ArcLessons is a resource for you to share lessons for using GIS in the classroom. You can browse a list of lessons by category or use the search tools to find lessons in your area of interest.  The Lessons on ArcLessons have been created by teachers for use in the classroom.
