Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide Deposit Mineral Potential Mapping in Northern Minnesota: GIS Spatial Analysis Methodology

Mineral exploration involves the integration of various types of information into the context of ore deposit models. These models act as simple mental paradigms that help the geologist sort and categorize vast amounts of data. Knowledge-based GIS spatial analysis (overlay of hundreds of specific maps) of geological, geochemical, and geophysical data (in context of the widely accepted ore deposit model) for a 5880 km2 area of northern Minnesota has been completed. The combination of the individual maps has been completed using fuzzy logic techniques, with map ranking based on the author�s interpretation of the importance of each map in the context of the ore deposit model.
