The use of Global Positioning Systems for data collection and navigation is expanding. Software exists for many of the medium to high-grade GPS receivers (ex Trimble GeoExplorer, ProXR) that allows users the ability to pass geographic information from the GPS to a GIS-friendly format (ArcView shapefile, Arc/Info coverage, etc). This information can then be stored and analyzed in a GIS.

Since the removal of Selective Availability handheld GPSs have become, for many, viable alternatives to the larger, more expensive models. It has been found that data conversion software for these handhelds, the Garmin model in particular, can be clumsy and insufficient. For this reason, the DNR has developed an ArcView extension that communicates with all Garmin model GPSs. It allows GPS users to seamlessly pass point, line, and polygon data from GPS to GIS (ArcView) and back again. The presentation will focus on demonstrating the functionality of this Garmin GPS extension.
