MN GIS/LIS Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

William Craig (1995)

Will Craig was a member of the original team that developed the Minnesota Land Management Information System (MLMIS), that was later moved to state government to become the Land Management Information Center (LMIC). During the period of development, Craig served in the vital roles of advisor, systems manager, and overall project director. Craig's early involvement in GIS and his training as a social scientist led him to see potential uses for GIS in land use, planning, demography, community development . . . areas beyond the early focus of GIS on natural resources.

Will is an essential member of the MN GIS/LIS Consortium, as a founding member, for his service on the Conference Committee, (chairing the committee during 1991 - 1993), and for his regular contributions to the newsletter and editorial board.

Will Craig is the Assistant Director for the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) at the University of Minnesota and also holds appointments as Adjunct Professor in both the Department of Geography and in Public Affairs. Craig holds degrees in mathematics and geography, with supporting fields in economics and statistics. His efforts have extended the bounds of knowledge through the publication of some 45 articles, reports, and contributions to various books. He has served on editorial boards, given many keynote addresses, served as a member of steering committees, task forces and boards of directors, helping to guide the development of GIS. These efforts have been applied at local and national levels, such as the presidency of the national Urban and Regional Information Systems (URISA). His efforts have benefited the University, the state, the country, and even extend to Zimbabwe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Therefore, by action of the Board of Minnesota GIS/LIS, they wish to express their appreciation for the vision, contributions to knowledge, and organizational efforts in the development of GIS/LIS. The award was presented by Bob Werner, University of St. Thomas, and was accepted by Will Craig.

Will's Lifetime Achievement Award plaque reads: "William J. Craig, Development and Research in GIS in Minnesota and Beyond."
