Randy is the soul of MetroGIS and a national leader for regional collaboration. Randy has coordinated MetroGIS's efforts since its inception in 1996. His vision and energy have encouraged participation and collaboration among a wide group of stakeholders, turning the Twin Cities metropolitan area into an internationally-recognized model for achieving collaborative (regional) solutions to shared information needs in addition to the sharing of geospatial data and knowledge. He has accomplished this by knowing when to be out front leading the charge and when to step back and lead from behind. He also has engaged policy makers to insure political viability of purpose and means. He believes in the NSDI vision, the value of sharing data, and the need to institutionalize equitable and sustainable policies that seek the greater public good. Besides work at home, he has been a national promoter of regional collaborations through publications and presentations.
