UW-River Falls Offers New GIS Certificate Program
By Dr. Ian Muehlenhaus, UWRF
The Department of Geography and Mapping Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls is launching a new GIS Certificate program. The GIS Certificate consists of 15 credits of coursework and may be completed within a year depending on a candidate’s schedule. This program is developed from our successful GIS and Cartography minor, which has been evolving with this changing field for over 25 years.
The three core courses are:
Cartography and GIS
GIS Theory and Methods
GIS Modeling and Analysis
Five elective courses are available, with two required for the certificate completion:
Quantitative Techniques for Geographers
Field Methods and GPS
Digital Image Processing
As part of the curriculum, students produce a professional portfolio. Three full-time faculty and one adjunct faculty teach the curriculum. The department supports an up-to-date dedicated GIS lab with ArcGIS 10, IDRISI, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash software.
The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is conveniently located in the St. Croix Valley, just 25 minutes from downtown St. Paul.
