The Consortium’s 2006 Spring Workshop series kicked off May 17 with an “Overview of ArcGIS 9” workshop at the Bemidji State University (BSU) GeoCenter. The GeoCenter, located within the Geography Department of BSU, was chosen as a workshop site to attract participants from all over the northern areas of the state.
Many volunteers, including Brett Case and Jim Lindstrom from the City of Bemidji and Jane Mueller from BeltramiCounty, assisted students during workshop exercises. The instructors, Tony Mayer, Headwaters Regional Development Commission; Darryl Holman, USDA Forest Service; and Annette Theroux, Pro-West & Associates, taught students during the morning and afternoon sessions of the workshop.
A total of 17 students from county, state and local government attended the full day workshop. The workshop served not only to add to the ArcGIS knowledge of participants but also provided an opportunity for organizations to network with each other. One of the options that arose as a result of the workshop is to form a GIS User’s Group for the northern region of the state to be accessible by those GIS professionals not able to attend a user’s group in other regions of the state.
Plans are already in place for future workshops in northern Minnesota. If you have any suggestions, please contact Jane Mueller, Professional Development Committee Chair for the Consortium, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 218-333-8457.
