GIS Rules of Conduct

By Will Craig, GISCI Ethics Committee

A set of Rules of Conduct has been adopted by the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI). The rules detail 40 activities that should and should not be conducted by ethical practitioners. These rules are more specific than the Code of Ethics that have been part of GISCI since its formation in 2004. The rules were adopted by the GISCI Board on October 25, 2006. It is expected these rules will be extended and modified over time.

Violation of either the rules or the code can be grounds for sanctioning of GIS Professionals, i.e., individuals certified by GISCI. A sanctioning process has been developed that allows individuals to make a formal complaint.
