More Air Photos Added to LMIC’s WMS Service

By Nancy Rader, Land Management Information Center

In many areas of the state, it is astounding how rapidly change can take place in a short time. This becomes easier to see, especially in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, with the addition of three more sets of air photos to LMIC’s web mapping service (WMS).

Available Photos

Six different sets of photos are now available:

Statewide or nearly statewide

·         2006:  2-meter, natural color (nearly statewide)

·         2003-04:  1-meter, natural color

·         1991-92:  1-meter, black-and-white

Twin Cities metropolitan area

·         2004:  0.6-meter, natural color

·         2000:  0.6-meter, black-and-white

·         1997:  0.6-meter, black-and-white

Options to Access the Photos

Choose from two options for viewing and using the photos:

1. NorthStar Mapper

This application allows users to view the photos with the option of turning various reference layers on and off. User-selected portions of the photos can also be clipped out and downloaded.

2. WMS Service

Users can add the photos as a layer to many GIS software packages without having to download the files to their computer. The Minnesota Geospatial Image Server webpage includes instructions for adding the WMS service to ArcGIS software.

An Example of Rapid Change

A section of land in Washington County (T28N R21W Section 13 in the city of Woodbury, at the border with Afton Township) has developed rapidly in the period between 1991 and 2006. All of the following photos were downloaded in a single clipping operation using NorthStar Mapper:

1991                                                            1997

2000                                                            2003

2004                                                            2006
