Minnesota County GIS Association
By Jane Mueller, Beltrami County GIS Director/E911 Coordinator
The Land Records Modernization Committee of the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Geographic Information has been working to form a Minnesota County GIS Association (MCGISA). The mission of the association is to advance GIS technology in Minnesota county governments by providing leadership support and advocacy.
Goals of the association include:
- Foster support and awareness to public officials;
- Cultivate growth through workshops, meetings and seminars;
- Provide a forum to share knowledge, experience and information among members;
- Act as a voice on Minnesota County GIS policy decisions; and
- Support development and implementation of standards.
MCGISA will function in sub-regions of the state. Each sub-region will work on issues related to them. It is the hope of this group to have a representative from every county who together will act as general members of MCGISA with voting privileges. Other individuals interested in membership may do so as associated non-voting members.
Information meetings are being held across the state with various user groups to inform county staff about the goals, mission and overall intent of the association and get their feedback. The first meeting was at the end of January in St. Cloud with the statewide Regional Development Organization GIS group and the Central Minnesota GIS Users group. In April, a meeting was held in Slayton with the Southwest Minnesota GIS Users group. The next meeting is planned for May 8 in Bagley for the northern counties of Minnesota with metro and southern meetings yet to be formalized. Formation of MCGISA is expected to come together with a kick-off meeting planned for Thursday evening, October 11 at the annual GIS/LIS conference in Rochester.
