Two more sets of photos are now available via web mapping services and viewers from LMIC and the U.S. Geological Survey.
2008 Minneapolis – St. Paul
These natural-color, 0.3-meter (approximately one-foot) resolution photos from the U.S. Geological Survey were taken in April 2008. They cover an area that includes the two downtowns – see the accompanying graphic. For further details, see the dataset documentation.

2006 40 Counties
One-meter natural-color photos were flown over 40 Minnesota counties between August and November 2006 (see earlier article). Some of it is leaf-on; some is leaf-off. In general, the colors are quite muted when compared with Farm Service Agency air photos. See accompanying graphic for the 40 counties covered; this flight fills some gaps in coverage from the 2-meter FSA photos taken in Summer 2006, most notably in Koochiching and St. Louis counties.
MDA Geospatial Services, Inc., flew the imagery, and USGS procured it in order to make it available to the general public. For further details, see the dataset documentation.

Obtaining the photos
Find the photos at these sites:
- USGS’s Seamless Server <http://seamless.usgs.gov/>
Either view or download the data, or click on a layer name to find a link to "WMS Capabilities". To find the data, choose "View and Download United States Data", then look under "Orthoimagery" and choose from the layer names:
- 2008: "Minneapolis – St. Paul (Apr 2008)"
- 2006: The dataset is divided into two UTM zones, so look for both "MN – Eastern Rural Counties" and "MN – Western Rural Counties"
- LMIC’s Geospatial Image Server
The site includes instructions for using this WMS service with GIS software.
