MetroGIS Applications and Web Services Needs Forum
By Mark Kotz, Chair, MetroGIS Technical Leadership Workgroup

Last January, MetroGIS sponsored the "Meeting Shared Geospatial Needs Beyond Data" workshop. As a result of what was learned at that meeting, the MetroGIS Policy Board agreed on four appropriate roles for MetroGIS regarding solutions to shared application needs:

  • Leadership
  • Coordination
  • Policy/Procedures
  • Funding

The next step in the process is to better define and prioritize GIS applications and web services commonly needed by MetroGIS stakeholders. To move the concept of shared needs forward, MetroGIS has invited thirty representatives of stakeholder groups to participate in a Geospatial Applications and Web Services Needs Forum to be held on November 20, 2008.

The purpose of this event is to develop a prioritized list of commonly needed GIS applications and web services. This list will be used by MetroGIS to guide budget and resource investments over the next few years. The results of the forum will also be used to explore opportunities to partner with non-government interests, which is another strategic goal of the MetroGIS Policy Board.

Forum results will be provided in a future GIS/LIS newsletter.
