Governor’s Commendation to Goodhue County GIS Office

An exceptional project – Formation of a County-Wide GIS Alliance, Goodhue County, MN – was selected for a Governor’s Commendation Award for 2009. The awards recognize organizations that have “gone the extra mile” to deliver products and services resulting in a more responsive government, promoting public access to information and reflecting the benefits of working in a collaborative environment that encourages similar efforts in the future.

Goodhue County Survey and GIS staff initiated a county GIS alliance to better use geospatial data to promote community and economic development throughout the region. They recognized a need for local communities to have common digital geo-referenced datasets and reliable access to GIS through internet websites, and for larger agencies to have seamless datasets outside their boundaries and regularly updated data such as imagery.

Although the County is the source for many base GIS layers such as parcels, centerlines, contours, and imagery, it does not have a business need to provide, nor maintain, city-specific information on the online GIS mapping site. However, the county has invested in the hardware, software, maintenance, and staff to provide a robust GIS solution that encompasses many of the basic needs for the local communities.

As local elected officials look for ways to partner with their counterparts to reduce costs, this initiative provides an excellent example of collaboration and building upon existing resources through sharing data, technology, and expertise.
