2010 Spring Workshops a Success
By Sally Wakefield, Spring Workshop Chair

On a beautiful spring day in May, the Mn GIS/LIS Consortium organized another round of low-cost and high-quality workshops for its members.  Training opportunities were offered on a variety of topics, ranging from cartography to programming; directed at many skill levels, from beginner to advanced.  Topics were sought to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of GIS professionals.

In all, 99 individuals from across Minnesota participated in 13 different workshops at the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s training center in Arden Hills.  Because of Mn/DOT’s willingness to host us again this year, registration costs could be kept the same as in previous years – especially important in this challenging economic environment.  They deserve our recognition and appreciation for their valued support.

None of this would be possible without the tireless work of the volunteers that helped plan and organize the event by contributing their time both on that day and in the preceding months.  A round of thanks also goes out to the instructors for their willingness to plan and lead workshops for very little compensation.  Finally, extra recognition should go to those instructors who donated all or part of their teaching stipend to benefit the organization’s student scholarship fund.  Over $1500 was donated by the instructors who participated!

Thanks to all who helped make this a successful venture as a volunteer, instructor or attendee!
