Bob McMaster, Educator of the Year

Each year since 2001 UCGIS has given an Education Award. This year’s winner is our own Bob McMaster, Professor of Geography at the University of Minnesota.  Beside teaching cartography and GIS, Bob is currently Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education. His job is to attract good students, provide them with a great education, and graduate them on time. He’s made progress on all fronts since taking this position in 2008. Earlier he was instrumental in the development of the University's Master of Geographic Information Science degree, one of the first professional graduate programs in the United States, and an interdisciplinary minor in GIScience.

UCGIS, the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, has made the Education Award since 2001. It is given to one individual per year based on outstanding contributions to GIScience education. Contributions can be reflected in teaching, curriculum design, education policy, and related activities.  McMaster has made significant contributions in each of these. Congratulations, Bob.

Editor’s Note: This award was given last summer; McMaster is officially the 2010 Educator of the Year. Apologies from your editors for not publishing this article sooner.
