The 2018 Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium Annual Conference would like to introduce the all new mobile event app! Want to get a good seat on some sessions download the app today and add it to your schedule so you do not have to write it down and then look for it when you check in. It will be in the palm of your hand instead. We will still have some printed copies of the program on site but they will be limited. 





The 28th Annual Conference and Workshops of the Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium will be held October 3-5, 2018 at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center in Duluth, Minnesota. Workshops will be held Wednesday, October 3, with the conference following on Thursday and Friday. Highlights of the three-day event include:

Sessions Presentations

Poster Abstracts FOR STUDENTS ONLY are sill being accepted.

The Sessions Committee will select presentations to represent levels of expertise and a broad topic base. Selection will be based on the valueof the proposed topic to the audience and the quality and clarity of theabstract. Are you new to speaking, or have an interesting short topic? Try the Lightning round — a quick, 12-minute presentation! The perfect intro to conference speaking, present work in progress, or give a brief overview, leaving the audience with a key point to remember.

Presentation Types:

  • Lightning Round (12 minutes)
  • Individual Presentation (25 minutes)

    • General Topic Presentation
  • Panel Discussion (60-90 minutes)
  • Product Demonstrations (25 minutes)
  • Poster Display
    • Display area: 4 ft (height) x 8 ft (width)
    • Project-specific and cartographic exhibits welcome
  • Web Map Display
    • Video submission format (.wmv), once an abstract has been accepted

Abstract submission:

  • Abstracts cannot exceed 300 words
  •  Incomplete abstracts will not be accepted
  •  Abstract submission is online only

October 2nd - Plan to be in town Tuesday evening and looking for a place to join your colleagues?  Be sure to join us at Hoops Brewing from 7-9:30pm for networking, light appetizers, and facility tours.  Hoops offers a variety of delicious beer as well as non-alcoholic beverages, all within walking distance of the DECC and Canal Park hotels. 
October 3rd - Whether you’re just arriving to Duluth or enjoying time after a day of workshops, stop by the Welcome Reception in the Lake Superior Ballroom for some light refreshments starting at 5:00 p.m.  Later, be sure to join us at the Great Lakes Aquarium from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.  This event, hosted by the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC), will be one you don’t want to miss.  A cash bar will be available and light food items will be provided.
October 4th - Join MN GIS/LIS and NSGIC members at Grandma’s Sports Garden for a night of networking and entertainment.  Doors open at 7:15pm with heavy appetizers provided.  A variety of local beers and non-alcoholic beverages will be available

Exhibit Hall

The vendor exhibit hall will showcase a redesigned layout and highlight the latest GIS-related hardware and software, GIS products and services. The exhibit hall will be open Wednesday afternoon through Friday afternoon.

Exhibitors’ Reception

Conference registration includes admission to the Exhibitors’ Reception on Thursday evening. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served and a cash bar will be available. The reception will be held in the exhibit hall, providing another opportunity for attendees to visit conference exhibitors. Registration information and workshop descriptions will be available in July. Conference registration includes lunches, evening receptions and all refreshment breaks.

    $135 if payment received by September 7

  • Student Rate (includes all presentations and lunches) $45

  • Session and Poster Presenter Rate
    $230 if payment received by September 7
    $310 if payment received after September 7

  • Presenter Rate
    Session and poster presenters will receive a $45 discount from the full conference rate if payment is received by September 7.

A maximum of one discount is available for each individual presentation. If more than one person will be presenting in a session, it is the responsibility of the session presenters to coordinate who will apply for the discount. Additionally, no discounts are available for product demonstrations.

New for 2018, Conference themed shirts are available for purchase!  Only $12.00! These durable, classic tee-shirts will come in navy with a stylish white logo.  Not only will you get a trendy shirt, you’ll be supporting the growth of individuals with 100% of the sales going to the Education Fund!

Shirts are only available for purchase online, with sales ending September 14. Purchased items will be available for pick up at the MN GIS/LIS booth at the Annual Conference, October 3-5.

K-12 Educator Day IV

The Minnesota Department of Education and Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium are excited to announce Educator Day IV. This year it will be held at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center on Wednesday, October 3 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Educator Day III, held in Bemidji last October 2017, had seventy-two K-12 teachers and District staff attend. We are excited to see you again this year! The day will include many hands-on GIS activities, sessions and a lunch that will highlight Matthew Winbigler from Cloquet School District. Matthew attended the first Educator Day in 2015, signed up for an ArcGIS organizational account, and hasn’t looked back. He will discuss how GIS is being utilized in Cloquet’s middle and high school classes. He will bring along one of his students that was a winner in the 2018 Minnesota Map Competition.

Student Assistant Program

The Consortium is seeking full time students interested in GIS to assist us with logistics on-site throughout the conference in Duluth. Accepted student assistants will receive:

  • Complimentary registration
  • Hotel accommodations (shared with other students)
  • An experienced mentor
  • And much more!
