MN GIS/LIS Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

Dave Gorg (2002)

Over his 41-year career at Mn/DOT, Dave Gorg has contributed significantly to Minnesota's surveying and GIS/LIS communities. Dave's advocacy has always been the collection and use of high accuracy coordinates for spatial information. He has been a pioneer and leader in GPS and the establishment of Base Stations to improve the accuracy of GIS data collection from the general planning level to the higher accuracy needs for land surveys. To those ends, Dave has been a forerunner and champion for implementing the use of the NAD83, NAVD88, NSSDA, the Minnesota County Coordinates System and for the establishment of Minnesota's HARN (high accuracy reference) network.

Dave has been on the Governor's GIS Council since 1999 and has clearly been a leader and visionary in the areas of GPS and high accuracy GIS/LIS. He is recognized both statewide and nationally for his leadership in GPS research and implementation. Dave has led several statewide task forces relating to the higher accuracy location of spatial information, including chairing the Statewide GPS Advisory Committee. He is also frequently sought out by national organizations like the Transportation Research Board, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, ASPRS and ACSM to participate on committees dealing with GPS/GIS issues.

Perhaps Dave's most significant contribution to the Minnesota GPS/GIS/LIS community has been his legacy for Mn/DOT data partnering and sharing. While Dave has always promulgated accessibility of Mn/DOT-generated location data products and programs, he has also been instrumental in securing Mn/DOT resources to partner with others. One example would be his relentless pursuit (and final establishment) of a U.S. Coast Guard CORS GPS tower at Pine River providing statewide redundant coverage for one-meter accuracy GPS data. Other examples include partnering with state agencies like LMIC and DNR to finish the statewide Digital Raster Graphics dataset and with local governments like Washington County to obtain higher accuracy aerial photography for photogrammetric and GIS/LIS applications.

Dave's retirement ceremony certainly gave testimony to his penchant for data partnering. Several individuals representing a cross section of government agencies and professional organizations went up to the microphone to thank Dave for his help with their GPS/GIS/LIS projects. Perhaps the most telling comment came from the University of Minnesota's Max Donath when he said, "…there wouldn't be any intelligent transportation systems in Minnesota if it weren't for Dave Gorg."

Dave's Lifetime Achievement Award plaque reads: "David M. Gorg, High Accuracy Data Visionary; Data Partnership Leader"
