MN GIS/LIS Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

David D. Claypool (2000)

David has been an active and leading participant in both the Land Surveying and GIS professions throughout his career. As Ramsey County Surveyor, he was the first to use survey quality accuracy GPS for measuring short line distances (in this case, Public Land Survey section lines). He predicted in his 1986 presentation at the Land Surveyor conference that by 1999 Surveyors would be using GPS as another measuring tool in their everyday work.

His work of obtaining GPS derived coordinate values for the Public Land Survey corners in Ramsey County, led the County to be the first in Minnesota to have a coordinate- controlled GIS database.

In both cases, David's accomplishments showed us that what seemed like an impossible or monumental task in the beginning, is now reality or considered "best practice" due to his pioneering work.

In 1992, David received the E.A. "Bud" Rathbun Award of Merit for his active representation of Surveying in the development of Geographic Information Systems in Minnesota, and in 1996, he was awarded Surveyor of the Year for his dedicated service to the profession.

David was a Charter Member of the Minnesota Governor's Council on Geographic Information and Chaired this GIS/LIS Consortium from June 1991 until December 31, 1992. He currently sits as the ACSM representative for the FGDC's Cadastral and Metadata Sub-Committees; he represents County Surveyors on Minnesota's Electronic Real Estate Recording Task Force; he is a member and has held Board positions for three Professional Surveyor organizations in the state; and is the Vice Chair for the MetroGIS Coordinating Committee.

What makes David seem unique is that his involvement with committee work does not stop after the meetings are over. People seek him out to participate in these committees for a few simple reasons: he comes prepared to work, he communicates information back to the respective interested communities, and he looks to future.

David's Lifetime Achievement Award plaque reads: "David D. Claypool - Local GPS Pioneer, Statewide GIS Leader, National LIS Visionary"
